Some women are born with abnormalities of the female reproductive system, including the vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. Sometimes the anomalies are single and sometimes multiple. Many congenital abnormalities are asymptomatic, so they are often unrecognized by patients and their physicians.
The most common anomalies are septate uterus, longitudinal vaginal septum, absent vagina, bicornuate uterus and didelphic uterus. Some of these may lead to cyclic pain around menstrual cycles in circumstances where blockage of the outflow of blood occurs. They may also lead to difficulty becoming pregnant or problems such as recurrent miscarriage or preterm labor.
Doctors Bateman, Williams and Smith, Board Certified Infertility Specialists, have received specialized training and have extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of these congenital anomalies.
