Some women are born with abnormalities of the female reproductive
system, including the vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes
and ovaries. Sometimes the anomalies are single and sometimes
multiple. They are often unrecognized by patients and their
physicians because they are fairly uncommon in the general population.
They are also commonly misdiagnosed, again, because they are
fairly uncommon in the general population. The most common anomalies
are septate uterus, longitudinal vaginal septum, absent vagina,
bicornuate uterus and didelphic uterus. Some of these may lead
to cyclic pain around menstrual cycles in circumstances where
blockage of the outflow of blood occurs. It may also lead to
difficulty becoming pregnant or problems such as recurrent miscarriage
or preterm labor.
Drs. Bateman and Williams have received specialized training
and have extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment
of these congenital anomalies.
